Sitapur District is situated in the central part of Lucknow division in Uttar Pradesh, covering an area of about 5,743 sq km. It adjoins the Bara-Banki District, Bahraich District, Kheri District, Hardoi District, and Lucknow District. Legend says that Sita, wife of Lord Ram, stayed here during a pilgrimage. Later, King Vikramaditya established this place in memory of Sita and gave the name, Sitapur. Related to ancient, medieval and modern history, it is a land of seers and Sufis. yatra (journey of five main religious Hindu places) will not be completed without visiting the Neemsar or Namisharanya, a religious place in Sitapur.
The temperature varies from 6°C to 43°C. Main rivers are the Gomti, Chowka, and Ghagra. Agriculture is the main occupation of the people. Wheat, rice and Urd are the main crops, and sugarcane, mustard and groundnuts are the cash crops.
Major tourist places are Ilasia Park, Mahavir Park, Sarojini Vatika, Vaidehi Vatika, and Shaurya Stambh. Sitapur is also well known for its cotton and woolen mats (Duries).
Sitapur city is situated on the bank of river Sarayan, along Lucknow-Delhi National Highway No-24, about 89 km from Lucknow.
