Karimganj



Karimganj, the seat of administration of Karimganj District, is a charming town situated on the northern fringe of Karimganj District near the border with Bangladesh, in Assam. It is a prominent center of trade and commerce in the region. Karimganj is located 340 km south of the state capital, Dispur.

Karimganj rose to prominence after it was designated the status of the headquarters of a subdivision in 1878. Even after Independence in 1947, it continued as the seat of administration of a truncated Karimganj sub-division. In 1983, Karimganj was made the capital of the newly formed Karimganj District.

Karimganj is flanked by the rivers Kushiara and Longai, with the former forming its border with Bangladesh. It is an important river port in the district and has seasonal cargo and freight transport link with Kolkata via Bangladesh.

Silchar Airport (Kumbhirgram Airport) serves Karimganj. Karimganj Railway Station is on the narrow gauge line connecting Tripura and Assam. National Highway 44 passes through Karimganj.
