Vellore




Vellore is situated around 145 km southwest of Chennai. The fort at Vellore witnessed the famous ‘Vellore Mutiny’ of May 1806. Vellore also stood testimony to several wars between the British, the Marathas, and the Muslim princely states during the 17th and 18th centuries. Vellore is the headquarters of Vellore District. The Palar and the Ponnar rivers flow through the town. The century-old Christian Medical College and Hospital is a landmark of Vellore.

The Vijayanagara fort and its temple is the major attraction.

Famous for educational institutions, Vellore has an Engineering College, Teachers Training Institute, and many other technical and higher education institutions.

The nearby railhead is Katpadi, 6 km away from Vellore.
