Valliyur Subramanyar Temple

The Subramanyar Temple at Valliyur in Tirunelveli District is a rock-cut sanctum carved out of a hill. The principal deity here is Lord Muruga with his consort Valli. Adorned by many mandapams, the temple also has separate shrines for Natarajar (Shiva) and Dakshinamurthy. The teertham is the Saravanapoikai and it is believed that the tank was created by Murugan according to the request of his consort. Legend also has it that the temple was discovered by a Pandya King. Giri pradakshinam is the main festival celebrated here. Skanda Shashti, the float festival in the month of Kartikai (November-December) and the annual festival in the month of Chittirai (April-May) are other famous festivals.
