Tenkasi

Varanasi of the South



Tenkasi is a town located 53 km north of Tirunelveli. The town was ruled by the Pandya kings in the 15th-16th centuries, and later by the Madurai Nayakas. The town is also known as Varanasi of the South because it is home to the ancient Vishwanatha temple dedicated to Lord Shiva.

The resort of Kuttalam, situated at an elevation of about 167 m on the Western Ghats is just 6 km from Tenkasi. It is famous for its waterfalls, the waters of which is believed to have medicinal qualities as it flows through forests of herbs.

The nearest airports are at Madurai and Thiruvananthapuram. Tenkasi has its own railhead and bus station. The best time to visit is July-September.
