Melur is a major commercial town, situated 30 km north-east of
Madurai, in
Tamil Nadu. It is located on
National Highway 45B and is 32 km south-west of
Tiruppattur.
Melur has a history that dates back to the Sangam period and it is also famed as the birth place of Kabilar (Poet in Sangam age) and Manickavasagar. A step stone related with the Pandavas found in the Keelaiyur Village relates the place to the epic Mahabharata.
Thiruvathavur, Alagar Kovil, Melur Nagamma Kovil, Sivan Kovil, Melavalavu Karupu Kovil and Vellalur Elaikatha Aamman Kovil are some important sites in and around Melur.
