Papanasam Falls, 42 km west of
Tirunelveli, lies on the Tamiraparani River. The falls, also called Agastya Falls, is believed to be located at the place where
Shiva and
Parvati appeared before the
sage Agastya. Papanasam means absolution of sins.
It is an important pilgrim center where people take bath in the waters to relieve themselves from sins. Papavinashweshwara (Shiva) Temple is nearby.
