Cheyyar




Cheyyar is a taluk headquarters in Thiruvannamalai District of Tamil Nadu. Located in the north-eastern region of the district, about 40 km south-west of Kanchipuram, this prominent town is an important place, on the banks of the Cheyyar.

As Lord Vedapureeshwarar is believed to have imparted spiritual guidance to the celestials about the Vedas at this place, it came to be known as Thiruvothur. Thiruvathipuram, Tiruvettipuram and Tiruvattiyur are the other names. Saint Thirugnanasambanthar converted a male palm tree into a female palm tree at this holy place. Vedapureeshwarar Temple (Vedanatheshwarar Temple) is located on the northern banks of the Cheyyar.

Vakkadai, Anakkavur, Moranam, Mamandur and Virambakkam are the nearby places.

Cheyyar lies on the State Highway between Arcot and Vandavasi. Chennai, the capital city, is 98 km north-east and Arani is around 25 km west. Nearest rail access points are Kanchipuram Railway Station and Arni Road Railway Station. Chennai International Airport is the nearest airport.
