Thanjavur Maharaja Serfoji's Saraswati Mahal Library Museum




Thanjavur Maharaja Serfoji's Saraswati Mahal Library Museum is located at Thanjavur in Tamil Nadu. It has on display palm leaf and paper manuscripts, rare books, miniature paintings and illustrated manuscripts. The library houses the belongings of Rajah Serfoji II, an erstwhile ruler of Thanjavur.

It boasts a collection of ophthalmic case sheets of patients maintained during the reign of Rajah Serfoji II. Each case sheet contains an illustration of the patient’s eye, prescriptions and other details pertaining to the patient. The library also holds a rare collection of books belonging to Rajah Serfoji II. Numbering more than 4500, these books are written in French, English, German and Danish languages. They cover a range of topics that include Music, Classics, Journals, Periodicals and Lexicons.

The museum is open for visitors between 10:00 to 13:00 hrs and 13:30 to 17:30 hrs on all days except national holidays.
