Panchalankurichi

Panchalankurichi, 3 km from Ottapidaram and 18 km north-west of Tuticorin, is a village of historical importance. It is the place where the great warrior Katta Bomman (known as 'Veerapandiya Kattabomman') raised his voice against British rule in the 17th century.

A memorial fort for him was constructed there by the Government of Tamil Nadu in 1974. Shri Devi Jakkammal Temple, a temple dedicated to the hereditary Goddess of Kattabomman is located at Panchalankurichi. Near the fort, the cemetery of British soldiers is found.

Panchalankurichi can be accessed from Tuticorin through Kurukuchalai or Pudhiamputhur or from Kayathar on Madurai-Tirunelveli Highway.
