Located 55 km southwest of Cuddalore, Neyveli is famed for the Neyveli Lignite Corporation Limited - the biggest open-cast mechanized lignite mines in India. Neyveli has an area of 54 sq km and the employees of Neyveli Lignite Corporation constitute a major chunk of the population.
