Diu District is an off-shore island on the western coast, off the Gulf of Cambay. Diu got its name from the Sanskrit word ‘dweep,’ meaning 'island.' Diu spans 40 sq km and its headquarters is at Daman. It is situated at an altitude of 29 m above the sea level. The main languages spoken are Gujarati,

The island of Diu is connected to the mainland by a narrow channel in the north. Chasi is the main river. Diu receives an average annual rainfall of 540 mm. Dance forms include the Mando Dance, Vira Dance and Verdigao. Diu has a warm climate throughout the year.
The fort built by Portuguese is a major place of tourist interest. Other attractions: Fortress of Panikot, Gangeshwar Temple, Navlakha Parshwanath Temple,
Jama Masjid, Diu Museum, Jallandhar Shrine, Somnath Temple, Jagdish Temple, Mahalaxmi Temple and Kankai Shrine. The best time to visit Diu is from October to May.
Diu Airport is the nearest airport. Nearest railhead is at Delwada (9 km). Regular state transport bus services operate from Una, Delwada to Diu.
