Shanmugar Temple




Shanmugar Temple is located about 20 km from Mayiladuthurai, Nagappattinam District. The temple deity is Lord Muruga in standing posture along with his consorts Valli and Devayanai. The temple has a Rajagopuram and two prakarams. Inscriptions from the temple reveal that the temple dates back to the Chola period. There are separate shrines for Bhramapureeswarar, Anandavalli, Dakshinamurthy and Mahalakshmi in the temple. Skanda Shashti, the major festival here, is celebrated in the Tamil month of Aippasi (mid October – mid November). Other festivals are Kartikai Deepam, Arudra Darisanam and Chittirai Vishu.
