Madurai Kamaraj University, established in 1966, is located in
Madurai. Originally known as Madurai University, this State University comprising of 72 departments has about 109 affiliated colleges and 18 schools.
Engaged in research and extension activities, the university has study centers/information centers at Madurai, Chennai, Tiruchirapalli, Theni, Ramanathapuram, Tirunelveli and Nagercoil. Besides offering regular courses through affiliated colleges, it offers distance education programs and Open University programs through Directorate of Distance Education. Postgraduate and research programs are facilitated through the departments of the university and other approved research centers.
