Thiruppugazh, a familiar book in Tamil, is a chief composition of the saint poet, Arunagirinathar. A collection of hymns, the book has stimulating devotional songs dedicated to Lord Muruga. Besides the songs on Muruga, Thiruppugazh deals with 64 episodes of Lord Shiva and the power of Sakthi (Parvati). The first half of all the songs focuses on the various evils faced by the humankind and the second half deals with the mercy of the Lord. It is believed that the message of the Vedas and the Upanishads are reflected in Thiruppugazh.
