Virudhunagar




Virudhunagar, earlier known as 'Virudupatti', is situated 45 km southwest of Madurai and is the headquarters of Virudhunagar District.

Virudhunagar is the home town of Bharath Rathna K Kamaraj, freedom fighter and former Chief Minister of the state. Virudhunagar is a major trading town and it exports edible oil, cotton, chilli, spices, and cardamom. The river Kowsika flows through the town.

The prime interests are the memorial house of Kamaraj at Virudhunagar and the 400-year-old Mariamman temple and the pool inside the temple.

The nearest airport is at Madurai. Virudhunagar Junction Railway Station is managed by the southern railways. National Highway 7 has its route through Virudhunagar.
