Grizzled Indian Squirrel (Ratufa macroura) is a large squirrel but smallest species of the genus. Crown is clearly separated from nape by pale band. There are two main pelage types. One is black dorsally with dark cheeks, while the other is grizzled overall dorsally with black streaked with gray and white and with pale cheeks. Tail is black or black streaked with gray with pale mid-ventral line.
Head to body length is 340-380 mm. The squirrel weighs about 1000-1500 gm. Its limbs are black or blackish. Dorsal pelage of feet, ankles and forearms are yellowish buff.
The animal can be seen in the Chinnar Wildlife Sanctuary, Kerala, and Srivilliputtur Grizzled Squirrel Wildlife Sanctuary, Tamil Nadu.
