Gingee Fort



Gingee Fort, also spelt Genji Fort, is a 9th century fort located at Gingee in Viluppuram District of Tamil Nadu. Gingee lies on the Tindivanam-Thiruvannamalai route, about 25 km from Tindivanam.

Situated at an altitude of 800 ft, the fort is enclosed by a huge rampart of 60 ft thick. The original fort was laid by the Kone Chiefs. It was ruled by Vijayanagar Empires, Marathas, Mughals, Carnatic Nawabs, the French and the British.

The fort can be visited on a small entrance fee. It is open daily from 9:00 to 17:00 hrs.
