Sivanmalai

Sivanmalai is famous for its Sivanmalai Hill Temple. It is one of the three shrines in Erode District associated with Lord Muruga. The place lies 40 km north of Daarapuram near Coimbatore and 5 km from Kangeyam.

Sivanmalai belongs to the Kongu country of Tamil Nadu in the Coimbatore-Erode area. It is referred as ‘Pattiyalur’ in the ‘Tiruppugazh’, by the saint poet of Thiruvannamalai, Arunagirinathar. Legends of the hill are linked with the marriage between Lord Muruga and Valli. It is also said that the hill was part of the Sanjeevani Hill brought by Hanuman for restoring the life of Lakshman. Both Sivanmalai and the neighboring Udiyurmalai are rich in rare medicinal plants. Precious and semi-precious stones have also been mined from Sivanmalai. Thaipusam, Aadi Krithika and Panguni Uttram Festivals are celebrated here along with important days such as Krithika star and new moon days in every month.
