Darasuram

Tourist importance of Darasuram is from the ancient temple here. 30 km from Thanjavur in Tamil Nadu, the temple at Darasuram was built in the 12th century by Raja Raja Chola II of the Chola dynasty. The temple, called the Airateswara or Darasuram temple, is a fine specimen of Chola architecture. The artistic brilliance is still evident from the miniature sculptures that adorn the columns in the front. The figurines that surround the temple which resemble those at the Brihadeeswara Temple are a later 14th century substitution. The temple has been well-preserved by the Archaeological Survey of India.
