Subramania Bharati

The Father of Modernism in Tamil Literature


Subramania Bharati (1882-1921) was a renowned writer who introduced modernism in Tamil literature. He has to his credit a number of patriotic and devotional songs. Most of his writings depict contemporary social affairs. Panchali Sabadam, a poem based on the epic Mahabharata, is one of his popular works. Among his other significant works are Kalippattu, Kannanpattu, and Kuyilpattu.
