Sherdukpen Tribe




The Sherdukpens inhabit the valley, at an altitude of 5000 to 6500 feet, surrounded on all sides by steep hills, the Bompu La to the south, the Naring La to the west and the Bomdi La to the north in Kameng District of Arunachal Pradesh. The Sherdukpens are a small tribe. They are good agriculturist but their main interest is trade. Their religion is an interesting blend of Mahayana Buddhism and tribal magico-religious beliefs. Sherdukpen tribe's staple food is cereals supplemented by fish, edible roots, mushrooms and leafy vegetables. The favourite beverage is the indigenous beer chak, brewed from cereals. The Sherdukpens manufacture utensils and furniture very artistically.
