Karikili Bird Sanctuary




Karikili Bird Sanctuary is in Kanchipuram District near Vedanthangal Bird Sanctuary, about 90 km from Chennai with an area of 61 hectares. The Sanctuary is a combination of barringtonia, acacia nilotica trees and dry evergreen scrub and thorn forests and is home to numerous species of breeding birds including various kinds of herons, cormorant, egret, open-billed stork, darter, spoonbill, and migratory birds such as shovellers, pintails, stilts and sandpipers.

The nesting season commences late in October and the birds are through with breeding and disperse to their feeding grounds about February. The best season to visit Karikili is November to February.

Chengalpattu Railway Station is about 30 km away.
