The township of Ambattur is situated 16 km west of Chennai, on the Chennai-Avadi Trunk Road. Proximity to Chennai and excellent infrastructure has made Ambattur one of the biggest industrial estates in South Asia. Spread over an area of 1221 acres, Ambattur has over 1370 industries. The T.I. Cycles of India Limited and Dunlop Rubber Company are the major industrial units functioning here.

The temples of Lord Shiva and Sri Vinnaraya Perumal, and the Mounaswami Mutt are places of religious interest.

Ambattur has a railway station on the Chennai- Arakkonam broad gauge line and is also connected by road to major towns and cities nearby.
