Jaisalmer Fort

Jaisalmer Fort was built by the Bhatti ruler, Jaisala in 1156 on the Trikuta hills. It is the second oldest fort in Rajasthan. This 80 m golden yellow fort looks like an enormous sandcastle.

The fort is bounded by 3 walls and features 99 bastions. It also has narrow winding lanes and four huge gateways, the last one leading to the main chowk. The fort also has five interconnected palaces. The stone pathways leading to the royal palace pass through four gates called ganesh pol, suraj pol, hawa pol and bhoota pol. The interior has a perennial source of water. The fort has a number of beautiful havelies and a group of Jain temples that add to its tourist appeal.

The Jaisalmer fort is home to a large number of people. Its small, winding lanes are packed with houses, temples, and shops. Camel safaris are popular especially during the annual Desert fair.
