Sachiyamata Temple




Sachiyamata Temple, built during the 10th and 11th century, is one of the ancient temples among the Osian temples, situated at Osiyan in Jodhpur District, Rajasthan. It is dedicated to Goddess Sachiyamata (Sachchika), a transformation of Mahishasura Mardini (Durga). This temple is worshipped by both Hindus and Jains.

Sachiyamata Temple faces west and has an ambulatory and a large assembly hall with 8 torana-arches. The roof of the assembly hall rests on the pillars, which are arranged in such a way that it forms an octagonal shape. It also has a pancha-ratha sanctum, a vestibule and a small porch. The ceiling of the temple is adorned with 16 bracket around the dome sculpted with female dancers. The Shikhara is grouped with two rows of turrets. The walls hold the figures of gods, apsaras and the regents.

There are small temples dedicated to Lord Vishnu and its incarnations surround the central shrine. Apart from the carvings of the serpent coils on the ceilings, these temples have sculptures of Radha and Krishna.
