Kumbhalgarh Sanctuary




With the majestic fort of Kumbhalgarh standing guard, Kumbhalgarh Sanctuary is spread over an area of 578 sq km in Udaipur, Rajsamand and Pali districts of Rajasthan. The most rugged part of Aravali forms its core area and remains barren for most part of the year. But when the rain gods smile this area is clothed in green and becomes a haven for a wide spectrum of wildlife.

Wolf, leopard, sloth bear, hyena, jackal, jungle cat, sambar, nilgai, four horned antelope, chinkara and hare are the most commonly spotted fauna. The avifauna of the area comprises of gray jungle fowls, red spur owls, parakeets, golden orioles, gray pigeons, bulbul, peacocks and doves. It is the only sanctuary in the country where Indian wolf is breeding successfully.

Best time to visit is March to May and September to November. Foot tracking and horse safari are popular among the tourists.

The historic city of Udaipur is around 90 km away. Nearest airport is at Udaipur. Udaipur City Railway Station is the nearest railhead. The Udaipur-Pali-Jodhpur road passes through the sanctuary.
