Great Indian Bustard



Great Indian Bustard (Ardeotis nigriceps) is a tall ground dwelling bird with a long neck and long bare legs. The neck is white and there is a black crown on the forehead. The upper-body of the bird is brown and wings are marked with black, brown and gray. Males have a larger black crown, long hind crown feathers and a black band across the breast.

The bird prefers open country having thorny bushes and tall grass interposed with cultivation. It is omnivorous, mainly feeds on grass, small shrubs, insects, rats, chana and groundnut.

The bird can be seen in the Gaga Great Indian Bustard Sanctuary, Gujarat, and Great Indian Bustard Wildlife Sanctuary, Maharashtra.
