Ravi River

Ravi River, a joint stream formed by the glacier-fed Badal and Tant Gari, originates from the Bara Banghal - a branch of the Dhauladhar range of Himalayas. The right bank tributaries of Ravi are the Budhil, Tundahan Beljedi, Saho and Siul; and its left bank tributary is Chirchind Nala.

The total length of the river is 720 km, out of which 158 km flows through Himachal Pradesh. It turns southwest near the boundary of Jammu and Kashmir and enters Punjab and flows into Pakistan. The biggest sub-micro region of Chamba District is formed by the river.

Ravi flows from heights along the foot of the Dalhousie Hill with terraced fields through the Chamba valley. It flows in the west direction through a trough separating the Pir Panjal from Dhauladhar range and then turns south, cutting a deep gorge.

From Bara Bangal of Kangra District, it flows through Bara Bansu, Tretha, Chanota and Ulhansa.

Chamba town is situated on the right bank of the river. The river was known as Irawati in Sanskrit literature.
