Amritsar, literally pool of nectar, is an ancient and fascinating city in Punjab
. This Sikh holy city is about 280 miles from
and 16 miles from Wagha, with a population of over four hundred thousand.
The city, the largest in Punjab, plays a major role in the business and commercial life of the state. It is India's leading exporter to the Middle-East, and the leading distribution center of dry fruits, tea and condiments.
Amritsar houses several significant religious and historical sites. The
Golden Temple is the most famous of these. It is the symbol of strength and conviction of the Sikh people all over the world. Some other tourist sites in the city are Akal Takhat, Jallianwala Bagh, Durgiana Temple, and the summer place of Maharaja Ranjit Singh. The temples Hari Mandir and the Durgiana Mandir are also quite famous.
The city has a good transport system and a moderate climate. September to March is ideal for a visit.
