Morinda is an ancient town situated on the
Chandigarh-
Ludhiana State Highway, just 25 km from
Rupnagar, in
Punjab. It is also known as Baganwala (the place of Gardens), owing to the numerous gardens of mango trees in the area. Morinda is about 30 km from Chandigarh.
The town is believed to trace its name from Mor Jats. With the lapse of time, it came to be known as Moran and then Morinda.
First co-operative Sugar Mill was also set up at Morinda to consume the sugarcane, which is a major crop of the area.
Major tourist attractions include an ancient gomba, which dates back to the time of Aurangzeb, Gurdwara Kotwali Sahib and Gurdwara Fatehgarh Sahib. Gurdwara Shahid Ganj, built in the memory of Baba Fateh Singh and Baba Zorawar Singh, the younger sons of Guru Gobind Singh , is worth visiting.
Morinda has a railway station on the on Sirhind-Nangal railway line. Ludhiana Airport and Chandigarh Airport are the nearest airports.
