Aizawl




Overlooking the Twalang River Valley, Aizawl (1300 m above sea level) is the capital city and hill station of Mizoram. Aizawl is the hub of religious and cultural activities in the state. Mizos are the inhabitants and agriculture is the main occupation. English and Mizo are the languages spoken. A popular dance form performed by them is Cheraw (bamboo dance). Though formerly the believers of a spirit named Pathan, the community has now embraced Christianity.

The prime attractions include State Museum, Zoological Garden and Durtlang Hills. Berawtlang Tourist Complex, at a distance of 9 km, is famous for fun picnics. Chapchar Kut, Mim Kut and Pawl Kut are the principal festivals celebrated. Scenic lakes, waterfalls and hills enhance the beauty of city. There are schools and colleges ensuring better education opportunities. Tamdil Lake (83 km), Vantawng Waterfalls (137 km) and Lunglei (233 km) are interesting locations nearby.

A large variety of foreign as well as local products can be found in New Market of Bara Bazar. Accommodation options are Hotel Chief and Ritz Hotel among many others. Aizawl enjoys good weather throughout. It is air-linked with Kolkata. Mizoram has a good network of roads. The only railway station at Mizoram is the Bhairabi railway station at Bhairabi, which is linked to Silchar in Assam. Aizawl is connected by National Highway 54 to the rest of the country via Silchar.
