Handiaya




Handiaya is a beautiful village 6 km south-west of Barnala. Tradition says that Guru Tegh Bahadur, the ninth Sikh Guru, blessed this village with his presence in 1665.

Handiaya houses a 64 m square sarovar (pond). Devotees believe that this pond has medicinal power to eradicate various diseases. According to myth, Guru Tegh Bahadur halted in a grove near this pond. Major draw is a gurdwara named Sahib Guru Sar Pakka Patches IX. Built by the ruler of Patiala, the gurdwara has a 5 m domed room and a platform where the Holy Guru Granth Sahib is kept. During Amavasi, special gatherings take place, which are attended by thousands from every nook and corner of the region.

Barnala Railway Station is the nearest railhead and the nearest airport is at Ludhiana.
