Amritsar District




Amritsar District of Punjab is bounded by the districts of Gurdaspur in the north-east, Kapurthala in the south-east and Ferozepur in the south. It also has an international boundary with Pakistan on the western region. Amritsar covers an area of 5,075 sq km with a population of about 3 million. Amritsar city is the headquarters.

Amritsar is nearly a level plain, with a slight slope from east to west. It is the headquarters of the Sikh religion. There are 2 main rivers - Ravi in the north-west and Beas in the south-east. The main crops are wheat, pulse, maize, millet, cotton and sugarcane. The district has factories for ginning and pressing cotton.

The main attraction is the Golden Temple. Other tourist destinations are museum at Ram Bagh, Jallianwala Bagh, and Fort Gobind Garh. The only international airport of Punjab is in Amritsar. It has a railway junction which connects India with Pakistan.
