Pondicherry District




Pondicherry District is a flat land occupying an area of about 290 sq km. The headquarters is at Pondicherry. The district is home to 0.7 million people. The main rivers running through the district are Gingee and Pennaiyar. The main crops cultivated in Pondicherry are rice, sugarcane, coconut and millets. There are several large and small scale industries including the Swadeshi cotton mills Ltd, Sri Bharathi mills and Anglo-French textiles.

The Bahour and Oussoudu lakes are the 2 biggest ones in Pondicherry district for fishing purposes. The nearest airhead is at Chennai. Pondicherry is well connected by road and rail. A narrow gauge rail track connects Pondicherry to Viluppuram in Tamil Nadu. The best season to visit is from October to March.
