Mayiladuthurai, also known as Mayuram, is located 281 km south of Chennai
. The river
passes through the town. According to myth, Goddess Parvati
took birth as a peacock (mayil or mayur) due to a curse. She worshipped Mayuranathar -
– for absolution in this place.
