Shri Aurobindo

Shri Aurobindo, a great social reformer and spiritual leader, was born on August 15, 1872 as Aurobindo Ghosh. He was educated in England. The culture of medieval and modern Europe deeply influenced him. He was equally learned in Indian culture and beliefs.

In 1906, Aurobindo became the principal of the Bengal National College. But he resigned his job to join India’s fight for independence. His bold editorials in the 'Bande Mataram' made him famous. From 1908 to 1909, he was kept under detention by the British Government. During this period, he underwent a spiritual transformation which led him to withdraw from the political field. Shri Aurobindo left for Pondicherry to devote himself to a spiritual life where he remained for 40 years. After his death in 1950, the spirit of Shri Aurobindo is kept alive through his vision and ideals, propagated by the Aurobindo Ashrams across the country
