Soura Tribe

Settled near the forests of Koraput and Sambalpur districts in Orissa, Soura tribes are known as marathon walkers, hunters and climbers. They are also known by the names such as sabara and sora.

Souras are of two kinds namely Laria and Oriya. These tribes practice shifting cultivation. They sell rice, corn, millet and turmeric for their livelihood. Their houses are situated on the slope or foot of the hills.

These ancient tribes believe in polygamy, shamanism and forest deities. Soura women wear large balsa wood plugs in their pierced ears which touch their shoulders. Souras are known for their wall paintings called as 'Ikons'.
