Samleshwari Temple




Samleshwari temple is situated on the banks of the Mahanadi River at Sambalpur in Orissa. Sambalpur town derives its name from Goddess Samleshwari, believed to be the protector of the town. The Temple exhibits an extremely accomplished style of sculptural decoration. The temple is considered to be constructed by the king of Sambalpur, when ordered to do so by the Goddess in his dream.

The most prominent festival celebrated in this temple is the festival of Navratri and Durga Puja. During these festivals the temple and the streets are decorated with lights. On such occasions, the temple wears a festive look and is crowded by devotees from all over the state.
