Barunai Temple

Barunai Temple is a hillock temple at Barunai in Khordha District. The temple is about two km south of Khordha and is dedicated to Goddess Durga.

Situated on the northern slope of the hill, the temple is about 45 m above ground level. A major portion of the hill is covered by reserve forests. The temple houses two images in black stone, called goddesses Varunai and Karuani, sitting together. A perennial spring flows nearby. The temple is approached by a flight of steps. The thick mango groves on both the sides of the stone-steps add to the beauty of the place. Inscriptions belonging to ancient period are seen in the caves of the hills.

The main celebration is a three-day fair conducted in connection with the Sankranti festival in June. The temple is about 32 km from Bhubaneswar, the state capital.
