Situated in the central part of
Assam is the Karbi Anglong District. It is surrounded by
Golaghat District in the east, the state of
Meghalaya and
Morigaon District in the west,
Nagaon and Golaghat districts in the north, and
North Cachar Hills District and the state of
Nagaland in the south. Headquartered at
Diphu, Karbi Anglong covers an area of 10,434 sq km and holds a population of about 0.8 million.
This hilly area experiences different climates in different parts. The winter season is from October to February. The temperature ranges from 23°C to 32°C in summer. The average rainfall is about 2,416 mm. There are many rivers flowing through the district - Kopili, Amreng, Borpani, Kolioni, Dhansiri, Dikharu, Deopani, Jamuna, Patradisha, Longnit, Doigrung, and Nambor. The chief crop is paddy. Many other crops are also cultivated here following the '
jhum' system of cultivation (shift cultivation). Mineral deposits found are limestone, china-clay, feldspar, and coal.
The highest mountain peak is the
Singhason Peak which is at about 1,360 meters above sea level.
