District headquarters of East Garo Hills



Williamnagar, district headquarters of East Garo Hills is located near the Simsang River. Lying in the upper reaches of the Simsang River, the town was formerly called Simsanggre. In 1976 the name was changed to Williamnagar, after the name of the first Chief Minister of Meghalaya, Captain Williamson Sangma. Being the district head quarters there are several government offices and its accommodations with in the town. Overlooking the beautiful Simsang River the government Circuit House and the District Council Inspection Bungalow are very attractive. It is gradually growing to an important place for cultural, educational, and socio-economical activities. From the planned town, Williamnagar there are daily buses connecting to Shillong and places within the Garo Hills and outside. The land is very fertile and suitable for horticultural products of various kinds. A ‘sim or salt-lick nearby, attracts many kinds of wild animals. Elephants and tigers hunt in the surrounding thick jungles.
