Nongkhnum Island is the largest river island in
Meghalaya and the second largest in Asia, after
Majuli Island in
Assam. Spanning an area of 25 sq km, the island was formed by the bifurcation of the Kynshi River into the Phanliang and Namliang rivers.
There is a sandy beach Wei-Phanliang, about an area of 100 square meters, at the point of the divergence of Kynshi River. The Phanliang forms a beautiful lake adjacent to it. The rivers converge at Thongrin.
The Island is featured with big trees, grassland areas and natural playground for playing football and golf. In addition there is also a place for landing a helicopter. Nongkhnum is endowed with magnificent perennial falls namely
Weinia Falls in the northern side,
Thum Falls in the southern side and
Langshiang Falls on the western side. Variety of fishes are found in the pool at the bottom the fall.
Nongkhnum Island is located 14 km away from
Nongstoin, the headquarters of
West Khasi Hills District. The wooden bridge over the Weinia Falls leads to the Island.
