Moirang

Moirang is one of the prominent towns located in Bishnupur District of Manipur. The place, which abounds in natural beauty, heralds much archaeological significance as well. Moirang is about 45 km south of Imphal, on the Kwakta-Bishnupur road.

A tour to this place provides tourists an opportunity to appreciate the ancient culture and heritage of Manipur. The famous folk dance known as Khamba Thoibi originated here. The place is also known for a costume called Moirangphi, a variation of the saree.

In the history of the Indian freedom struggle, Moirang has a special position. It was here that the flag of the Indian national Army was first hoisted, on April 12, 1944.

Major points of attraction here include the ancient temple of the pre-Hindu deity, Lord Thangjing, and the Indian National Army Museum (INA Museum). The museum reminds the visitor of the noble sacrifices made by the INA under the charismatic leadership of Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose.

Keibul Lam Jao National Park and Loktak Lake, the biggest fresh water lake in the north-east Indian region, are the nearby excursions. Regular buses are available from the private bus station of Waheng Leikai junction to Moirang.
