Aimol Tribe

Aimol is a scheduled tribe in Manipur, inhabiting Aimol Khullen at Chandel District and at Kha-Aimol near Loktak Lake and other places in the Senapati District. It is also believed that some migrated to Mizoram and Tripura. Aimol literally means ‘mountain of crabs’ (‘ai’ means crab and ‘mol’ means mountain). So the belief is that, they came out of the mountains like mountain crabs.

Main cultivation is paddy. Apart from this, they also grow sesamum, maize, soyabean, pumpkin, gourd, ginger, tomato, chilly and groundnut. Their domestic animals are mithun or water buffalo, pig, ox and chicken. Aimol’s important trade and marketing regions are Kakching and Pallel.
