Murud

Murud is a picturesque village situated 45 km south of Alibag in Maharashtra. The place is full of coconut and betel nut trees and is famous for its shimmering sandy coastline.

Though not a big settlement, this erstwhile capital of the Siddhis of Janjira boasts a few tourist destinations besides its alluring beaches. Major point of attraction here is the majestic island fortress of the Siddis -- Murud-Janjira –the only fort that stood impregnable against the invading Marathas, Portuguese and the British, even after repeated attempts. Battered by waves from four sides, its 40 ft high wall still stands intact against the vagaries of time. The undiscovered beaches of Nandgaon, Murud and Kashid, a few kilometers away, are ideal for a quite stroll or sunbath. Other places worth visiting in the vicinity include Padmadurg, Dattatraya Temple and Garambi Lake.

Roha Railway Station on the Konkan Railway is the nearest railway station. Mumbai is 165 km by road, which is also the closest air-strip. Murud can also be reached by ferry from Mumbai to Rewas jetty (90 minutes), from where one could catch one of the many State Transport buses plying to the village.
