Mount Mary Church

Mount Mary Church is one of the most famous churches in Mumbai. It is located on a quiet hillock in Bandra. The local Marathi speaking community refers to the deity Mother Mary by the name Math Mauli. Owing to the belief that the god fulfills everybody’s wishes, scores of devotees belonging to various faiths visit this church daily.

Mount Mary Church was originally built in AD 1640 and later re-built in AD 1761. Deserving special mention is the manner in which the devotees offer their worship. People suffering from an ailment offer candles shaped as the affected part of their body. Similarly wax models of babies, houses and aero-planes represent the prayers of the childless couple, homeless destitute and the ambitious persons respectively.

The church comes into a festive mood in September, during which the festival of Virgin Mother is celebrated with great pomp and grandeur. This weeklong affair is better known as the Bandra Feast.
