Karanja is steeped in history - references about this town are found in the chapter 'Patalkhand' of the Skanda Purana. It was on the north-south pilgrim route in olden days and hence was a stopover for saints, hermits, pilgrims and other travelers before they continue with the journey. Karanja is home to many temples, some as old as 1000 years. Notable among them are Shri Siddheshwar, Shri Chanreshwar, Shri Nageshwar and Shri Kamakshi Devi. The town is a famous pilgrimage center for the Jains.

Nearest airport is at Nagpur. Nearest major railheads are at Akola and Murtazapur, the town is an hour’s bus ride from the stations. Alternatively, one can also board a narrow gauge train from Murtazapur to Karanja on the Yavatal line - more popularly known as the 'Shakuntala Railway'.
