Bhaja Caves




Bhaja is located near Karla in Mumbai, Maharashtra. There are 18 Bhaja caves which had been made for Buddhist nuns in the 2nd Century BC. These caves contain fine sculptures, of which a prince seated on an elephant, a prince in a chariot, a dancing couple and three armed figures are very special. Chaitya hall located in Cave no 12 is the finest of the cave complex. A beautiful waterfall is also located in the area. Cave no 1 is the residence of the master architect, 10 are viharas and the other 7 contain inscriptions about the donors.
