Melghat Tiger Reserve is located on southern offshoot of the Satpura Hill Range. A prime habitat of tigers, this reserve is located in Chikhaldara and Dharni tehsils of Amaravati District, Maharashtra. Gugamal National Park forms part of this reserve.
It spreads over 1597 sq km of tropical dry deciduous forest. Tapti River borders the north-eastern boundary of the reserve. Leopard, sloth bear, wild dog, jackal, sambar deer, gaur, barking deer, nilgai, chital, flying squirrel, wild boar, langur, rhesus monkey, porcupine,
pangolin,
mouse deer, python, otter, caracal and black napped hare also dominate the reserve.
The best time to visit is October to June. Wan Sanctuary is an extension of the reserve.
The nearest airport is at Nagpur, 225 km away, and the nearest railway stations is at Amaravati, 110 km away from the reserve. The reserve is approachable by state highway from Paratwada to Dharni.
